Mommy Makeover: How Long Should I Wait After Giving Birth?

In recent years in the United States, there are more than 3.6 million live births annually. If you’ve recently joined these numbers and welcomed a new addition to your family, we congratulate you!

If, like many other moms, your pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding have left you with a body you don’t recognize anymore, we’re here to help.

At McHugh Plastic Surgery, Dr. Thomas McHugh and our team offer the popular Mommy Makeover service, which can hit the reset button on your body after having a child.

In the following, we look at some of the guidelines for this procedure, including timing.

What is a mommy makeover?

The first point we want to make about the mommy makeover is that no two are exactly alike. In fact, we tailor each mommy makeover to the patient’s goals, which might include:

We also try to group procedures whenever possible so you can consolidate the downtime and get to your mommy makeover results more quickly.

When is a good time for a mommy makeover?

Now let’s get into the timing of the mommy makeover, which is an important consideration. There are two points we want to make when it comes to timing:

1. Wait until you’re done having children

To get the most out of your mommy makeover, it’s important to be sure that you’re done with family building. If you undergo a mommy makeover and get pregnant again, most of your results will fade away as your body undergoes the dramatic changes that come with carrying and delivering a child.

2. Timing after your last child

If you’re sure you’re not having kids in the future, then the next piece of the puzzle in terms of timing is how long you have to wait after your last childbirth to get a mommy makeover.

The simple answer to this is to wait at least 6 months after childbirth, though a year is even better. During the first year after pregnancy, your body can continue to undergo changes as hormones fluctuate and you shed some of the baby fat naturally.

At about the year mark, your body stabilizes, and then we have a much better idea about where you are and where you’d like to go.

To reiterate, the biggest rules of thumb for the timing of your mommy makeover are to make sure you’re not having more children in the future and to wait about a year after your last child.

If you meet these criteria and you’d like to sit down with Dr. McHugh to go over your mommy makeover options, please contact our office in The Woodlands, Texas, to schedule a consultation.
